- The TU Bergakademie Freiberg is one of the world's most renowned teaching and research institutions in the field of geological, mining and engineering sciences. It is the oldest mining university in the world, founded in 1765 on the basis of centuries of active silver mining.
- The Chair for Underground Mining Methods at the Institute of Mining and Special Civil Engineering is located at the research and teaching mine Reiche Zeche.

- The focus of research projects is on the topics of extraction, production, backfilling and sealing structures, Mining 4.0, standardisation, mine planning, mine communication systems and mine rescue to promote a future-oriented, safe, and responsible approach to mining.

- The Chair for Underground Mining Methods intends to contribute to the network through research, dissemination, and the further development and utilisation of project outcomes.
